Community Guidelines

Effective October 12, 2026

Shelf & Spice is for readers who love romance, from closed-door sweet to five-pepper dark. Every taste is welcome. These guidelines keep book clubs fun for everyone. They're part of our Terms of Service.

The short version: no judgment about what people read, no spoilers without a warning, and treat club members the way you'd want to be treated at a real book club meeting.

Be kind about taste

Don't shame anyone for what they read, how spicy they like it, or how many books they finish.
Criticize books, not people. “This plot didn't work for me” is great; insulting another member isn't.

Respect spoilers and warnings

Set your reading progress before commenting so people who are behind won't see spoilers.
Tag content warnings when you know a book has them. It helps people pick what's right for them.

Keep it safe

No harassment, hate speech, threats, or content that sexualizes minors. Ever.
Don't share other people's personal information, including addresses, phone numbers or photos, without their permission.
Organizers: be careful with meeting locations. Use a public place for clubs with people you don't know well.
Don't post pirated books or links to pirated copies.
No spam, scams or unrelated advertising in comments or club descriptions.

Usernames & staff

Pick a username that's yours: no impersonating other readers, authors, brands or our team, and nothing hateful or explicit.
The same goes for flair and owner tags: keep them fun, not hateful, explicit or pretending to be staff. Club owners can clear flair in their club.
Shelf & Spice team members have a gold staff tag (like “Co-Founder”) next to their name. Staff will never ask for your password or payment details.

Club organizers

You decide who's in your club. You can remove members and make a new invite link (which turns off the old one) at any time.
If someone is breaking these guidelines, remove them and let us know.
You can make up to 10 trusted members club admins. Admins can set picks and meetings, edit the club, manage invite links and remove regular members. Only the owner can add or remove admins or delete the club, and admins can't remove the owner or each other.

Reporting a problem

Email reports@shelfandspice.com with the club name, the member's name and what happened. We review every report and may remove content or suspend accounts that break these guidelines.

Affiliate links never affect which books we suggest; recommendations come from your clubs, your tropes and general reader consensus.

No ads or sponsored picks. There are no ads in the app, and no publisher or author pays to appear in recommendations, Trope Bingo or the Matchmaker.

Ownership. Shelf & Spice is a trade name of Gravitt Digital LLC, a Colorado limited liability company. Book titles, covers and author names belong to their respective owners. Shelf & Spice isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Amazon, Goodreads, TikTok or any publisher.
